A study conducted examined the effects of viewing edit Instagram images
on young girls’s body images. In an online survey, 144 girls from the
Netherlands aged between 14 to 18 years old were randomly shown either 10
original Instagram photos or 10 edited Instagram photos. The photos that they
were shown were 10 selfies take by girls about the same age as the
participants. The manipulated photos were retouched by the researchers, who edited
the girls to look slimmer and removed acne, eye bags, and wrinkles. The girls
then chose to agree or disagree to statements about the photos and then
answered questions about their body image and social comparison tendencies. The
results of the study revealed that just looking at the 10 manipulated photos directly
affected the girls’ body image in a negative way. Girls with higher social comparison
tendency were affected more strongly. The edited photos were also viewed more
positively by the girls. Lastly, the girls reported both the original and
retouched images realistic.
